Important Update 2: KH3 Canon Update

Player: Emma
Character: Naminé
Current Canon Point: The moment she chose to betray DiZ and try to tell Roxas the truth (early KH2)
Updated Canon Point: Post-KH3

Updated Background: From her canon point used in Emp, Naminé mostly plays a background role within the rest of KH2. She stays in hiding to be safe, but once Kairi is kidnapped and in danger, she steps out to help free her from the Organization. She makes sure that Kairi and Riku are reunited to make sure the girl is safe, but also to make sure Riku doesn’t disappear.

At the end of KH2, Naminé actually ends up rejoining with her original self, Kairi. By doing this, she gives up her physical form and lives in Kairi’s heart. She barely plays a role in the series after this happens, only seen in passing or in memories or data versions of herself. Early into KH3, Kairi mentions that it feels so unfair to Naminé that she can’t live her own life, and she wants to help restore her, just like Sora is on a mission to restore Roxas. They both want Naminé and Roxas to be able to live normal lives.

The only time we hear from Naminé in KH3 is when the final battle goes wrong, and Sora is taken to The Final World. Naminé is temporarily separated from Kairi due to an attack, and takes on a shapeless form as a star, like most beings do in this world. She also ends up speaking to Sora in an optional cutscene. While she can still sense Kairi’s heart, she cannot return to her from her shapeless form in the The Final World, but she assures Sora that when they are safe, she will return to Kairi. Sora informs Naminé that they’re trying to restore her to live her own life, but she doesn’t feel as if anyone misses her. But, as Sora do, he makes her feel much better. With her spirits lifted, she offers her help to make a better outcome in the final battle. She reaches out to Lingering Will -the memories left behind from Terra when he lost his body- with her special magic to go and help their friends.

The timeline resets, she is restored back to Kairi, and Lingering Will does show up to help thanks to her. She isn’t involved with the battle, but it is important to note that Riku Replica (aka Arden in Emp) leave her behind a blank replica vessel body for her to use. With that, she’s able to have her own body and exist separately from Kairi on her own. Toward the end of the battle, however, Kairi is killed. It isn’t said within the game, but the KH3 Ultimania (vaguely) confirms that when this happens, Naminé is freed from Kairi again:

”—How did Ansem the Wise and Ienzo and the others move Namine's heart into a vessel without Kairi being there?

Nomura: When Kairi was defeated the first time in the Keyblade Graveyard, Namine's heart was thrown into the Final World, right? And Namine's heart was also thrown out just before the final battle, when Kairi was hit by Xehanort's attack. I do plan to show the details of what happened after that.”

In the final scenes of the game, we see Naminé waking up in the vessel given to her by Arden, surrounded by the team of scientists from Radiant Garden. She is picked up by Riku via Gummi Ship and taken back to Destiny Islands. It’s unclear if she ends up living there, but she does spend a few peaceful moments with her friends as they enjoy the beach together.

Updated Personality: Nothing dramatic is changing here other that Naminé now has the ability to live a semi-normal life. Most of her time in emp has been spent enjoying that anyway, but she at least now doesn’t have to worry about returning home to oblivion or trapped in another heart now.

Updated Abilities: n/a at this time, but who knows what Nomura has up his wicked sleeves. I’ll be sure to update as needed in the future!

Other: She will return mid-March with most of the other castmates. Xion will be watching over her amulet in the meantime.

Questions: I have none, but I know how confusing this dumb canon can be so please don’t hesitate to ask LOL….
